HINDU FESTIVAL: Hindu priest Haridas Chakrabarty conducts a ritual in honor of the Hindu goddess Durga inside the Radha Krishna Temple in Chalan Kanoa. Members of the CNMI Hindu community observed their biggest religious annual festival “Navaratri Durga Puja”, which is an important Hindu Festival celebrated all over India with different rituals and festivities. It is a celebration of life, culture, popular customs and traditions.

CNMI's first Blessing of Pets

More than two dozen dogs and a handful of cats receive their blessings from Fr. Ryan Jimenez of the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa during the CNMI's first Blessing of Pets at the Mt. Carmel Cathedral. The Blessing of Pets is a worldwide celebration coinciding with the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, which falls every Oct. 4.

A Tribute to Vinae Deleon Guerrero

Miss Marianas Teen First Runner-up Vinae Sablan Deleon Guerrero died in a tragic vehicular accident along Middle Road in Gualo Rai on May 20.
She was driving a white Honda Civic when her car was struck by a boom truck, she was pinned on the driver's seat and her car was totally wrecked on the left side of the body.

Aside from winning the First Runner-up award on the 2007 Miss Marianas Teen, Deleon Guerrero was also adjudged the PTI Texters Choice Award, Best in Fun Fashion, and Miss Photogenic.

She was laid to rest at the Chalan Kanoa Cemetery on May 28, where at least 500 people showed up to pay their final respect to the 17-year-old beauty queen.

Typhoon Kong-Rey

Typhoon Kong-Rey moved quickly toward the Marianas with its packing winds of up to a hundred miles per hour on April 3. The typhoon caused minor power outages on Saipan, particularly Kagman, Dandan, and the entire southern part of the island.

Concorde garment factory shuts down

Hundreds of the 1,046 Chinese workers from Concorde staged a protest rally when it was announced that Concorde Garment Manufacturing Inc., company, the largest garment manufacturer in the CNMI, will be closing after 23 years of operations in Saipan. Concorde workers claimed their recruitment refunds at the Garapan Central Park.

On June 2005, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko made a historical visit on the island to commemorate people who lost their lives in the Second World War. The emperor and empress paid tribute to soldiers and civilians who died in World War II and offered prayers at two cliffs where Japanese soldiers and citizens killed themselves rather than surrender to U.S. forces.

Corporal Lee Roy Apatang Camacho was finally laid to rest on Feb 26 with his three sons-Lee Roy, Jr., 8, Layton, 7, and Leven Joe, 3-offering their last salute to their hero, their role model, their father at the CNMI Veterans Cemetery in Marpi. Lee Roy's remains was flown by a U.S. Air Force KC-135 escorted by crewmembers from 319 Air Refueling wing in Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota.

Saipan's Lion dance group perform a traditional Chinese lion dance presentation in front of the “Golden Pig” at the lobby of Saipan Grand Hotel and Hyatt Regency Saipan on Feb 16, in celebration of the Chinese New Year or Spring festival which marks the first day of the Chinese year 4705-“The Year of the Pig”. The Saipan Grotto is considered by many as one of the best shore cavern dives in the world, However Soken Home Saipan Corp., a Japanese-owned company, has been seeking approval from the CNMI government since June 2006 to build a monorail that would carry people up and down the Grotto's slope have cause different reactions from the local community, members of the opposition said that the project will inflict permanent damage to the environment and the local diving industry.

Forbidden Island Sanctuary

Explore the majestic view of the Forbidden Island Sanctuary in Kagman. The sanctuary is a rock formation that forms an islet within the Saipan Lagoon near the southern portion of Saipan. Big rocks scattered on different portions of the waters make giant Jacuzzis and swimming pools around the Forbidden island itself. Its isolation and the long trek to reach the island itself make it inaccessible to many. The island was declared a sanctuary under Public Law 12-46. As such, fishing and harvesting wildlife are prohibited.
